Austin Butler: Soft Wavy Mullet
The ultimate shape shifter, Austin Butler has dropped the raven-haired look that he had to play Elvis in the film of the same name (out now), and has styled his natural, dark blonde hair into this soft, wavy mullet.
In fact, MFH reckons that Austin’s hairstyle is a shorter, modern update of Patrick Swayze’s go-to mullet look in the 80s. (Google him Gen Z-ers).
Why We Love It:
Austin Butler’s soft, wavy mullet is the latest in a long line of looks from this hairstyle chameleon. Austin’s hair has been everything from raven black curtains, to long, blonde surfer waves, 50s-inspired quiffs, and that sweep-over look favoured by a teenage Justin Bieber.
But as Justin’s long, oval face shape suits volume at the top – hence he seems to go for styles that give his hair a bit of height.
Recently, Austin’s hair and makeup artist Jillian Hausalouska (whose list of clients include Jake Gyllenhaal, Penn Badgley and Sebastian Stan) spilled some of the secrets of Austin’s current hair look.
Admitting that she works with Austin’s natural hair texture rather than against it, she told GQ-magazine.co.uk: “I start by misting it with water until it’s damp, or if we are somewhere balmy and humid I’ll trade that in for a leave in conditioner like Christophe Robin’s Leave-In mist with Aloe Vera.
“I immediately add Sisley La Crème to prep and hold the shape and a dab of Leonor Greyl Eclat natural for added texture and separation.”
Jillian then dries Austin’s hair with a Dyson hairdryer (she uses the medium nozzle attachment and varies between using her hands to rough dry and a small round brush to lift the roots and various parts of the hair). “I finish with a cold shot of air and switch to the diffuser attachment to add volume and give a more tousled and natural finish,” she adds. “I then use Patrick’s M2S to add shine and really mould and shape the structure and feel of the hair. For touch-ups throughout the days when we’re out for a long time I use Kevin Murphy’s Touchable spray wax [if you struggle to get hold of it try this cheaper Paul Mitchell one instead] to maintain Austin’s texture and hold.”
Her biggest tip is that nobody should have to fight their hair. “It should flow and take shape with just the slightest bit of effort, whether that be product, blow dryer, brushes, combs, shampoo or conditioner,” she advised.
What To Ask Your Barber:
- Like the look of Austin Butler’s soft, wavy mullet?
- The cut is longer at the back and top, while sides and are cut a little tighter.
- Although this is a mullet-esque cut, it’s more about the volume and texture at the top of the hair.
- If your hair is especially thick or curly, talk to your stylist about thinning it out a little so it doesn’t ‘mushroom’ out too much.
