Nick Cave: Long, Straight, Slicked Back Hair
Iconic musician Nick Cave should trademark the title of The Coolest Man on the Planet – and his look, with his funeral suits and his shock of long, dyed, inky black hair – is a huge part of that.
Why We Love It:
If Reddit rumours are to be believed, Nick Cave has allegedly had a hair transplant, and possibly wears a hairpiece too.
But whatever he has or hasn’t done, his iconic hairstyle – long, straight, slicked back, dyed black – is as synonymous with the legendary muso as his vampiric looks and funeral attire.
In the past, Nick has apparently said he’ll dye his hair black until he’s dead.
This is just as well, because he’s one of the few men on the planet of this age (he’s 66) that can rock this kind of preternaturally dark hair while still looking unfeasibly cool.
And MFH wouldn’t have it any other way.
What To Ask Your Barber:
- If you’ve got short hair, you’ll need to grow it out so it’s all one-length and hits your collar.
- As hair grows around half an inch a month – but that’s also dependent on your genetics and overall health – patience will need to be one of your virtues!
- It’s worth getting regular trims every few months to get rid of any split ends to improve the health of your hair as it grows.
- If you’re keen on Nick’s dyed black look talk to your hairdresser about in-salon dyeing costs.
- If you’ve got a very different natural hair colour, or lots of grey creeping through, it might end up being an expensive habit.
- You can also ask your stylist for hair colour products they’d recommend buying, and any top tips they have for DIY dyeing.
Get The Look
- This is a look that works best for straight hair.
- If you have curlier/wavier hair you can still make it work but you’ll need to use straighteners regularly, which is incredibly damaging (just ask your female friends!)
- On damp hair, use a small amount of wet-look styling product (it’s best to build it up bit by bit) like pomade or wax, then use a vent brush to brush back the top and sides of the hair.
- Use slightly less at the back of the head.
- Blow dry on medium heat, using your brush to slick it back tightly on top.
- If you want extra hold, you can always add a little more product, then finish off with a spritz of strong-hold hairspray.
