How To Dress For A Formal Event

Not sure what to wear to a formal event? Man For Himself has put together a list of items that we think are essential for any smart occasion.

The festive party season may be over, but we all have important events to go to throughout the year. Whether it’s a wedding, a dinner party or a business event, it’s important to look your best at a formal event.

It can be tricky sometimes to decide what to wear but we’ve put together a list of essential items to make it that bit easier for you.

For any formal event, make sure you find out whether there is a dress code, as some can be more specific than others.

No matter what you wear, make sure you are comfortable, and wear it with confidence!

Suit

Find yourself a great suit. The perfect suit will last you a long time and will work well for any formal event.

You can’t go wrong with a classic tuxedo jacket. With the new James Bond film just around the corner, you will provide all the ‘suave spy‘ vibes with this one from Hackett.

Hackett have a great selection of suits for formal events, but we particularly like the classic fit of their sleek tuxedo jackets.

Their tuxedo jacket is simple in style and cut but the slight sheen on the peak lapel, pocket and buttons make this tuxedo look extremely luxurious.

For any suit, you need to make sure you have a suitable matching pair of trousers, along with a crisp shirt.

Shoes

The classic shoe for a formal event has to be a lace-up leather oxford shoe. They always look smart and if you already own a pair, just make sure you have given them a good polish. A patent pair of oxfords look great with a tuxedo.

If you prefer to go for a simple suit, you could also try a derby or brogue. We really like these handmade semi-brogues from Hackett. The detailing adds some texture and another aspect to the leather.

To add some personality, try a pair of brightly coloured socks!

Accessories

Man For Himself recommends to always go for a tie or bowtie to accessorise a formal outfit.

For the tuxedo jacket, a bowtie does look particularly smart and completes the look. If you want to add some personality, why not go for something with a print or try a bold colour.

Make you sure you are wearing a nice watch, under the sleeve of your shirt and don’t forget a pair of cufflinks, which are always a nice way to add a personal touch.

If you are a guy who likes to wear jewellery, go for it, but just make it doesn’t distract from your snazzy suit.

Hair & Styling

For any formal event, the key is to make sure you’re clean and tidy when it comes to your hair. The same goes for if you have a beard.

Keep all facial hair trimmed, or clean shaven. You can still try the rough and rugged look, but make sure your hair is freshly washed and brushed.

We recommend going for a slick style (watch how to achieve a similar style on YouTube), if you have medium length hair. Use a pre-styler to help build plenty of volume into the hair and depending on your type of hair, use a styling product that will give you enough hold, with a medium shine.

You can finish off with some hairspray, if you are planning on having a long night and need the style to last!
