Some men look good in t-shirts and some really don’t. But what are the alternatives to wearing a t-shirt this summer?
I was sat in a London beer garden this weekend. The place was packed out and full of guys of all different shapes and sizes. Apart from me, they all had one thing in common – they were all wearing t-shirts. It really hit me that some of the guys there would actually look far more comfortable and fashion-forward if they dressed more for their shape and own personal style.
Since hitting 30 last July, I’ve really noted that my style and how I feel about myself has changed. I like my clothing to be understated, form-fitting and of quality. Goodbye to streetwear and slogans, hello to premium pieces and classic cuts.
But dressing for you doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult. Follow my top tips to find an alternative to wearing t-shirts this summer.

T-Shirts – Where It Can Go Wrong
- Can hang in unflattering places.
- A poor quality t-shirt looks worse than a poor quality shirt.
- Can look far too casual and messy.
- Can give a lot of us guys ‘moobs‘.
Men’s T-Shirt Alternatives
Collared knitwear or collar shirts
Wearing collared t-shirts in summer is a great way to dress up a more casual outfit. It can also help to balance out your proportions.
The detail around your neck will move the eye up, away from your waist and chest.
Grandad collar shirts
The grandad collar shirt has fast become my go-to. It’s more casual and wearable than collared shirts and are a versatile piece.
Lighter and brighter colours can be worn to work with a blazer or can just as easily be worn at the weekend with shorts, jeans or casual trousers.
Push the sleeves for a more casual vibe and to ease yourself into the summer heat.
