About The Ordinary

The Ordinary is a skincare brand that many of you will have heard of. Their products champion simple, effective, and affordable products, making high-quality skincare accessible for all.

Building a skincare routine can seem daunting, and many of us men don’t have a routine for this reason. According to a Civic Science survey, only 29% of men have a skincare routine compared to 62% of women they asked.

Thankfully we’ve done the hard work for you and created four step-by-step skincare routines for dry skin, oily skin, ageing skin and spot-prone skin, featuring our favourite The Ordinary products. With this guide, you can start your skincare journey (or if you already have one, add some fantastic products!)

Routine for Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, incorporating hydrating products into your skincare routine is key for soft, moisturised skin.

Step 1: Prep

Squalane Cleanser – £14.90
Cleansing (washing your face) is fundamental to any skincare routine. This squalane all-in-one cleanser is moisturising, making it perfect for dry skin. It gently cleans whilst protecting the skin’s natural moisture barrier and preps it to absorb your treatment serums.

Step 2: Treat

Hyaluronic Acid 2% +B5 – £15.50
This serum is great for dry skin as it hydrates and plumps it for a smoother and brighter appearance. It’s the secret weapon in your routine, delivering potent benefits deep into your skin for noticeable results. Apply this serum after a toner or after step 1.

Step 3: Seal

Natural Moisturising Factors +PhytoCeramides – £9.60
Hydration is key to any skincare routine, especially for dry skin, so this product is ideal. It is the most nourishing moisturiser from The Ordinary, as it boosts skin hydration by 68%. It also strengthens your skin barrier and seals in your serum for optimal performance.

Routine for Oily Skin

If your skin is on the oily side, the best products for your skincare routine will provide cleaner, brighter skin without drying it out.

Step 1: Prep

Glucoside Foaming Cleanser – £11.10
This gentle cleanser is great for oily skin as it removes dirt and oil without stripping the skin’s moisture. It also improves skin texture and radiance, and preps your skin to absorb your treatment serums.

Step 2: Treat

Balancing & Clarifying Serum – £20.20
This serum is great if your skin is oily as it reduces the look of pores, excess oil, and uneven skin texture for visibly clearer skin. Apply this serum after a toner or after step 1.

Step 3: Seal

Natural Moisturising Factors +Beta Glucan – £5.80
This lightweight gel moisturiser works well for oily skin as the Beta Glucan helps retain moisture, without sitting too heavy on the skin. It also seals in your serum for even more radiant skin.

Routine for Ageing Skin

If you’re concerned about fine lines and wrinkles, this skincare routine can provide the moisturising and firming effects your skin needs.

Step 1: Prep

Squalane Cleanser – £14.90

This squalane all-in-one cleanser is moisturising, making it perfect for dry skin. It gently cleans whilst protecting the skin’s natural moisture barrier and preps it to absorb your treatment serums.

Step 2: Treat

Retinol 0.2% in Squalane – £7.40

This is the mildest retinol from the Ordinary. Retinol is a great ingredient for minimising the look of wrinkles, brightening the skin and fading dark spots. It is a strong ingredient so if you’re a first-time user it’s recommended to build up the retinol percentages slowly until you get to the highest percent. For The Ordinary, this is the 1% in squalane.

Apply this serum after a toner or after step 1. Only apply this serum at night as retinol can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays.

For more info on using Retinol, you can read our article here.

Routine for Spot-Prone Skin

If you’re prone to blemishes or acne, we recommend skincare products that will provide cleaner, brighter skin whilst evening out your skin tone.

Step 1: Prep

Glucoside Foaming Cleanser – £11.10
This gentle cleanser is great for spot-prone skin as it removes dirt and oil without stripping the skin’s moisture. It also improves skin texture caused by blemishes and preps your skin to absorb your treatment serums.

Step 2: Treat

Salicylic Acid 2% Solution – £6.10
This is a water-based serum which means it’s great for blemish-prone skin. It removes dead skin cells that can block your pores, creating brighter, more even skin. Apply this serum after a toner or after step 1.

Step 3: Seal

Natural Moisturising Factors +HA – £6.10
This moisturiser works with your skin to support its natural hydration barrier and seals in your serum for optimal performance.
