We all want thick and healthy hair, but is there a way to grow hair faster with the food that you eat?

While hair loss is closely tied to genetics, small changes in your diet can help improve hair growth for some individuals. Here are a few hair friendly foods and nutrients to help your hair grow faster. 


Grow hair faster: Iron

An iron deficiency can lead to anemia (a condition that develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin) and can be a contributing factor in hair loss for many men.

One easy way to increase your iron intake is by eating more beef which also happens to be high in protein. Increasing your protein and iron intake can improve your hair’s thickness and minimise hair shedding.

If you’re a vegetarian or don’t enjoy steak consider taking an iron supplement. Your doctor can determine if you have an iron deficiency with a quick blood test.

Grow hair faster: Protein

Our hair is made out of keratin, a form of protein. A diet that is insufficient in protein can slow down hair growth. You can find complete protein in things like beef, pork, turkey, lamb, chicken and fish.

Increase your protein intake by eating more chicken, salmon, shrimp and beef. If you are looking for leaner sources of protein consider fish.

Non-meat foods that are high in protein include eggs, Greek yogurt and legumes such as beans.

Grow hair faster: Omega-3 fatty acids

Hair can get dull and lose its luster if you’re not consuming an adequate amounts of healthy fats.

Salmon contains large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids which is excellent for providing nutrition to your hair’s oil glands.

Omega-3 fatty acids support the scalp’s sebaceous glands. These produce oil to keep the scalp hydrated and should help to prevent and promote healthy hair growth.

Since your body can’t produce these fatty acids on its own, it’s important you get these from your diet. Eating two servings of fatty fish like salmon or tuna per week can help keep your hair full and long.

Other sources of these beneficial fats are sardines, shrimp, cod, halibut and red snapper.
Vegetable sources include green beans and orange squash.

Grow hair faster: Biotin (Vitamin B7)

Biotin is also known as Vitamin B7 and frequently taken as a supplement in order to stimulate hair growth.

You can also get biotin from foods like avocados, cauliflower, egg yolks and liver. In addition to keeping hair healthy and strong, biotin also can also help to stabilise blood sugar levels and improve cardiovascular function.

Avocados are high in vitamins B and E, which work at the cellular level to protect and strengthen hair. As we know, Vitamin B is essential for hair growth whilst Vitamin E helps to repair damage on the scalp.

Even though nuts are a great hair-healthy option, they do contain a lot of fat. Nuts should always be eaten in moderation and as a substitute for meats, eggs and dairy products.
