Fragrances are more than just scents—they’re statements. Invisible accessories that tell stories, evoke memories, and even whisper something about the wearer.
But in a world where luxury perfumes often come with eye-watering price tags, many of us are turning to fragrance dupes as a more affordable option.
So, what do our fragrance choices – whether dupes or originals – say about us and our values?
What Are Fragrance Dupes?
I’m sure we’ve all seen the ads for Noted Aromas, CopyCat Fragrance or the Essence Vault? I mean, I certainly have. These are companies that offer you the chance to own an ‘inspired’ fragrance for a fraction of the cost of the original. They’ve become extremely popular over the last year and the online marketing for them has become extra noisy! I can’t go a day without sponsored stories targeting me, my love for fragrance, and bargains.
Fragrance dupes are essentially imitation perfumes designed to replicate the scent of the original. Typically, they come at a fraction of the cost, making them accessible to those who might shy away from the price tag of a premium scent.
‘Inspired by Creed Aventus’, ‘Inspired by Baccarat Rouge’, and ‘Inspired by Tobacco Vanille’ are just three fragrances on offer on one dupe site. Priced at £19.99 for 50ml, they are a fraction of the cost of the original and promise “Aromas similar to those found in” the original.
Dupes are alluring because they promise associated-luxury on a budget. But are they just an affordable indulgence, or do they undercut the craftsmanship behind the originals?
The Allure of Originals: More Than Just a Scent
Wearing an original fragrance is like owning a piece of art. Premium perfumes are crafted by master perfumers who spend years perfecting their creations. Each note is carefully balanced to create a multi-dimensional experience that evolves over time.
As someone working on developing a fragrance line for Anforh (yep, it’s happening), I’ve come to truly appreciate the artistry, time, and significant costs involved in creating an original. From working with a skilled perfumer to sourcing high-quality ingredients, designing the packaging, and even the testing and regulatory steps, it’s an intricate process that explains why these fragrances command higher prices. An original fragrance isn’t just about the scent; it’s about the entire story and experience it offers.
For many of us, choosing an original fragrance represents an investment in quality, individuality, and the belief that some luxuries are worth the splurge.
Why Dupes Appeal: The Practical Perspective
For others, practicality reigns supreme. Why spend hundreds when a dupe can offer a similar experience? Dupes are a way to experiment with different scents without committing to a hefty price tag.
There’s also the thrill of discovery – finding a fragrance that smells remarkably close to the real deal for a fraction of the cost can feel like a small victory. For some, dupes are a gateway into the world of fragrance, a way to explore without the financial leap.
Dupes cater to the budget-conscious or those who simply view fragrance as functional rather than an extension of identity. For these people, the bottom line is simple: if it smells good, it works.
Dupes vs Originals: What’s at Stake?
While dupes make luxury accessible, they also raise ethical questions. Many argue that dupes undermine the artistry and intellectual property of perfumers. Imagine dedicating years to crafting something original, only to have it replicated and sold cheaply. It’s a debate that divides even the most devoted fragrance enthusiasts.
Moreover, some believe that dupes dilute the experience. Originals often come with beautiful packaging, thoughtful storytelling, and a sensory journey that goes beyond the juice inside the bottle. Dupes, while functional, may lack the same depth and intention, making them feel like shortcuts rather than celebrations.
Value, though, is subjective. We all place our money where our priorities lie. For me, I’m not fussed by a flashy car – I bought mine for £3,000 and it’s anything but fancy. But when it comes to fragrance, good shoes, and a quality winter coat, I’m willing to invest. Others might prefer putting their money into exotic holidays or subscribing to every entertainment package on their TV. What we value says a lot about us and how we define what’s worth the splurge.
What you choose – dupes or originals – might hint at your values. Are you someone who values craftsmanship and storytelling, or do you prioritise practicality and function? Neither is inherently wrong, but both reflect something deeper.
Affordable Fragrance Options: Original Scents That Won’t Break the Bank
It’s important to remember that affordability doesn’t always mean compromising on originality. There are plenty of budget-friendly fragrances that deliver incredible quality and unique olfactory experiences without the hefty price tag. These are excellent for those who want the authenticity of an original fragrance without the luxury price point.
These are some of my favourites. Whether you’re exploring fresh, citrusy daywear or rich, evening scents, there’s an affordable original fragrance for every occasion.
- Roger & Gallet Cologne Twist Eau de Cologne | 100ml | £38 – A new release from Roger & Gallet, this arrived on my desk 2 weeks ago. It’s energetic, crisp and effortlessly elegant. Most definitely An easy-wearer for daytime.
- Bespoke Gin & Citrus Woods EDP | 100ml | £9.99 – A brand exclusive to Superdrug, Bespoke is a no-nonsense fragrance brand for everyone, regardless of gender. I particularly liked Bespoke Gin & Cutrus Woods. A spicy kick from a juniper, ginny note drying down to a warming amber-like skin scent. If you’re looking for beast-mode, this is not the one. But if you want a ‘chuck it in your gym bag’ or stocking filler scent, try this brand!
- M&S Restful Eau de Parfum | 50ml | £12 – I love the Apothecary collection from M&S. From hand soaps to diffusers and fragrances, these both look and smell great. Restful is a spicy, woody scent that feels both cool yet comforting. I’d most definitely recommend getting yourself into an M&S to try these… or it’s a safe blind buy.
- Diem fragrances | 30ml | £50 – Take the quiz to find the fragrance(s) that work for you. They’ll deliver a discovery set for you to try before picking the 30ml/full-size scent that resonates with you. I like Slow Exhale – a smoky, aromatic, tranquil scent to help centre and ground you.
- Lush Lord of Misrule | 30ml | £25 – Lush make some incredible scents. It’s not just unicorn-shaped glitter bombs, they really know their stuff when it comes to fragrance. I love Lord of Misrule – it’s a gorgeous balance of black pepper, patchouli and vanilla.
- Beauty Pie Brazillian Lime, Fig Leaves & Tea | 50ml | £28 (Members Price) – I love a fig fragrance! This one pairs creamy, cosy fig with the driving energy of lime, orange and black tea. If you’re looking for an energetic, fresh scent, try this!
- All Saints Sunset Riot Itense | £39 | 30ml – A pink pepper opening with a warming woody base. It’s a sensual, sexy fragrance that does day as well as night.
Your Fragrance, Your Story
Ultimately, your choice of fragrance is personal. It’s about what resonates with you and what you want your scent to say about you. Are you the person who indulges in the finer things, appreciating the artistry behind an original? Or are you the savvy, practical type who finds joy in a well-made dupe?
Your fragrance is part of your story – a way to express who you are and how you see the world. Whether it’s a spritz of something iconic or an affordable imitation, what matters most is how it makes you feel.
For Me…
Fragrance is deeply personal, and so is the decision to buy a dupe or an original. While dupes can democratise access to scent, originals often offer a richer, more meaningful experience. For me, the artistry, emotion, and craftsmanship behind a premium fragrance make it worth the investment.
But that’s my take. The choice is yours. So next time you choose a fragrance, ask yourself – what story do you want to tell?
