Have you ever wandered around the fragrance aisle and wondered what the difference is between eau fraiche, cologne, elixir, EDT, EDP and parfum? You’re not alone – the fragrance world can be full of confusing acronyms and terminology. But understanding fragrance types is important if you want to pick the perfect scent.

Generally speaking, the higher the concentration of fragrance oils, the better the performance of the scent will be. An eau de toilette has the lowest concentration, while a parfum or elixir has the highest.

Taking the time to understand fragrance concentrations will give you a better idea of what you’re getting with your scent. Choose based on the impression and longevity you want to achieve!

1. Eau Fraiche

If you’re looking for a light, quick-drying option, an eau fraiche is worth considering. Also known as a “fresh water” scent, eau fraiche has the lowest fragrance concentration of any perfume type at only 1-3%.

Don’t expect an eau fraiche to last all day – the ultra-low concentration means the scent only sticks around for under an hour. But for those times you need a refresh midday or just a hint of fragrance, it’s perfect.

The eau fraiche is also an affordable option for those that are on a budget. The low percentage of fragrance oil keeps it at a low price point and is safe for those with sensitive skin.

2. Cologne or Eau de Cologne

Cologne contains a very light concentration of only 2% to 4% fragrance, which is a step up from the eau fraiche. But just like the eau fraiche, this means the scent won’t last as long and typically only lingers for around two hours.

So if you apply cologne in the morning, don’t be surprised if you need to give yourself a spritz or two in the afternoon to keep that fresh scent going. The low concentration level guarantees it won’t overwhelm, but also means you may find yourself reapplying every couple hours.

3. Eau de Toilette

Eau de toilette is one of the most common types of fragrances. EDTs have a concentration level of 5-15% essential oils, which means their scent will generally last 2-3 hours on the skin.

Because EDTs contain less oil than other perfume types like eau de parfum, the scent is lighter and more subtle. This means you’ll have to reapply it during the day as the scent fades from your skin.

But, this is also why EDTs are ideal for daytime. As the sun sets and the EDT starts to wear off, you can transition into a new fragrance, keeping everything fresh and unique.

4. Eau de Parfum

While parfums have the most intense scent concentration, eau de parfum is also a great option for your fragrance collection. With a concentration level between 15-20%, eau de parfum provides nice scent longevity without being overpowering.

This high percentage means the scent really clings to your skin. Most people find EDPs to last around 5 to 8 hours, letting you go about your day without reapplication.

While it may not be quite as concentrated as parfum, eau de parfum is very economical. You’ll pay less than the high-end parfum but still get excellent longevity from your perfume.

5. Parfum

Parfum has the highest concentration of fragrance oils compared to other perfume types. With a concentration of 20-30%, parfum is guaranteed to last all day due to its potent formula.

Because it contains a high percentage of perfume oils, parfum does tend to have a higher price tag than lighter fragrances. However, all you need is a couple drops applied to pulse points like your wrists or behind your ears. Its intensity will keep the scent lingering on your skin, so you don’t have to reapply frequently. It’s worth the investment!

6. Elixir

Elixir fragrances are everywhere these days. So many perfume brands have jumped on the elixir trend and are releasing their own concentrated perfume oils.

Elixirs contain a much higher percentage of fragrance oil than your average eau de parfum – typically ranging from 20% to 40%. This higher oil concentration is what allows elixirs to really project their scent.

Despite using less perfume, you get a stronger scent that stays on your skin for hours. The delicate balance of notes in an elixir also means the fragrance develops beautifully over time.
