Selma | UK Premiere

Selma | UK Premiere

Last night was the UK premiere of Selma and I was there celebrate its release.

Set in 1965, Selma tells the true story of Martin Luther King’s protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama to secure voting rights for African Americans.

Starring British actor David Oyelowo (The Butler, A Most Violent Year) as Dr.Martin Luther King Jr., Tom Wilkinson, Carmen Ejogo, Tim Roth, Oprah Winfrey, Giovanni Ribisi, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Martin Sheen, the film’s release celebrates the 50th anniversary of the passing of the Voting Rights Act.

I’m ashamed to say that I had very little knowledge of this amazing story; and was even more shocked to learn that Selma is the first film to place Martin Luther King as the protagonist.

From the extreme violence of the white US officials during the peaceful marches, to King’s own personal struggle with the juggling of family life and leading the movement, the film brings all the emotion and drama of this story together into 2 epic hours.

And you don’t just have to take my word for it. Selma had four Golden Globe Award nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor, and won the award for Best Original Song. It’s also been nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Song at this February’s Academy Awards.

Straight after the film, I was whisked across town to One Mayfair (a gorgeous old church and the perfect party space) by Stella Artois who are supporting the film through their Stella Artois Bursaries; a scheme designed to assist the release of standout independent films.

Being serenaded by the London Community Gospel Choir; I sipped on an orange juice (yep, Dry January) and nibbled on tiny burger and hot dog canapes (minus the bread – I’ve also given that up for January) as I watched the stars of the film work the room.

My only disappointment about the night? Oprah Winfrey wasn’t there!

Selma is out in UK cinemas from 5 February, 2015
