Are we back to the best of Tom Ford or are we still chasing this marketing and these trends?
I’ve had a bit of a sketchy relationship with Tom Ford of late. I loved and do love some of the Tom Ford fragrances. Tobacco Vanille was one of my first. I got it in 2011 and I went and bought it again very recently from H Beauty, when I then tried this.
And so, when I saw this, I thought, “oh God, Tobacco Chocolat.” Like, “oh, what are we doing with this?”
I tried it on the skin and I said, “oh, that’s different and not at all as I, what I was expecting.”
The first spray and initial impressions of this are orangey, bright, luminous. It’s got an energy and a movement to it. The chocolate is drier and it’s more like a really upmarket cocoa powder that you’d have in a beautiful hot chocolate.
And then you got the woody smokiness. They’ve got something in this called Cocoa Smoke and this is their accord that they have trademarked, which is that cocoa, the dark chocolate, and then the tobacco smoke across it.
This feels like it has some of that quality of the first Private Blend fragrances. It feels really considered, it feels beautifully made, it feels like it’s got good performance, it feels like it’s got storytelling, but it also feels like it’s got some of that marketing. It feels like it does have some of the trend.
I think we are going in the right direction again. I also think that it very much sit as a brother of Tobacco Vanille. So, if you are a fan of Tobacco Vanille, swap the vanilla for the chocolate and this is what you’ve got. A candied liqueur like cognac, honeyed and slightly, sort of, sweet but still very wearable fragrance.
