The Pressure to Look Perfect: Steroids, Hair Loss, and Modern Masculinity
As men, we all feel the pressure to look good. Scroll Instagram or TikTok and it is wall-to-wall abs, veins, and inflated chest shots. Gym culture has created an ideal that feels impossible to live up to, so some men are turning to steroids as a shortcut.
Muscle or Hairline: The Choice Too Many Men Are Making
Muscle or hairline. For more and more of us, that is the trade-off. A new survey has revealed that 61% of male gym-goers have used or may consider using anabolic steroids (Oxford Online Pharmacy, Censuswide Survey of 1,000 UK male gym-goers, July 2025). The worrying part? Many know the risks, including permanent hair loss, and are still willing to take the chance.
As men, we all feel the pressure to look good. Scroll Instagram or TikTok and it is wall-to-wall abs, veins, and inflated chest shots. Gym culture has created an ideal that feels impossible to live up to, so some men are turning to steroids as a shortcut.
Why Men Feel Pressured To Look Perfect
This is not about weakness, vanity, or stupidity. It is about the constant comparison game that social media feeds us. The survey revealed that three-quarters of men aged 25 to 34 with gym memberships are the most likely to take or consider taking steroids. That is the exact age bracket where most of us are trying to carve out careers, relationships, and identities – and where confidence is at its most fragile.
Influencers and online coaches promote steroids as if they are harmless tools for quicker gains. What they do not talk about are the real costs. Younger men in particular are being fed an image of “perfection” that is not only fake, it is dangerous.
Steroids and Hair Loss: The Facts You Can’t Ignore
Anabolic steroids can accelerate male pattern baldness by raising levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles. One third of UK men do not know steroids can cause permanent hair loss, while 42% of those who are aware would still take them (Oxford Online Pharmacy, Censuswide, 2025). Among younger men, that figure rises to 50%.
Nick Richardson, a fitness expert and natural bodybuilder, put it bluntly:
“From my experience working in gyms, steroid use is very common, particularly among regular gym-goers. But the side effects, like hair loss, are rarely spoken about”
This is not about scaremongering. It is about honesty. If you are genetically prone to balding, steroids will speed that up. No filter, no fancy edit – just fact.
The Trade-Off: Bigger Biceps, Thinner Hair
The more time spent in the gym, the greater the risk. Shockingly, the survey showed that 71% of daily gym-goers admitted they have taken steroids or might consider doing so compared with 50% of men who only go once a week. That is a huge difference.
It shows the mindset: bigger biceps now, hairline later. But once the hair is gone, it is often gone for good. Even treatments like finasteride and minoxidil cannot guarantee regrowth, and they come with their own risks such as low libido and mood swings (NHS, “Anabolic steroid misuse” and Oxford Online Pharmacy, 2025).
We are trading long-term confidence for short-term gains, and many do not realise the full cost until it is too late.
Why Younger Men Need Our Support
The most worrying figure of all: half of men aged 25 to 34 would knowingly risk permanent hair loss for muscle gains. That is not just a statistic, that is our younger brothers, cousins, and friends.
At Man For Himself, we have always been clear that grooming and style should build confidence, not break it. Younger men, especially those new to the gym and influenced by social media, are the most vulnerable to these pressures.
We owe it to them to be upfront. No judgement, no shaming. Just honesty: steroids might make your chest bigger, but they could take your hairline with it.
Looking Good Without the Risks
There are healthier ways to look and feel good. Grooming, style, and confidence outlast the quick fixes. If your hair is thinning, there are treatments like minoxidil or finasteride that can slow it down, but they are not miracle solutions. And if you are already seeing changes, check our Hairstyle Directory for styles that work with thinning or balding hair.
Supporting your natural hair health matters too. Regular cleansing with a texture-focused shampoo, hydrating with a quality conditioner, and styling with lightweight sprays can all improve how your hair looks and feels day to day. The Anforh range (by Man For Himself) was built exactly for this – no promises of magic, just products that work with your hair, not against it.
Looking after yourself, building a solid grooming routine, and owning your style is far more sustainable than chasing size at any cost.
Modern Masculinity Is About More Than Muscle
This is not a moral lecture. It is a reminder, as men, that the pressure to look perfect is real and it affects us all. But masculinity today is not about being the biggest guy in the room. It is about balance, self-respect, and confidence in your own skin.
Muscles fade, hairlines recede, but confidence and style last. Before you pick up steroids, ask yourself: who am I really doing this for?
About the survey
The research was conducted on behalf of Oxford Online Pharmacy by Censuswide on 1,000 adult male gym-goers in the UK in July 2025.
The questions included:
- Have you ever used or considered using anabolic steroids for muscle gain or athletic performance?
- To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statements? “Anabolic steroids can cause temporary or permanent hair loss”
- Would you be willing to risk permanent hair loss if it meant achieving your ideal body shape or muscle mass?
- If you experienced hair loss due to steroid or supplement use, to what extent would it affect your self-confidence or body image?
