This autumn/winter, the trend for men’s trainers is all about clean lines and block colour. See how to style them here.

A common misconception by men is that trainers can’t be worn into autumn/winter… or by anyone over the age of 21. Quite often we pack away our lighter, more casual footwear in exchange for darker, heavier boots, rather than searching for something that ticks both the boxes for fashion and function.

Picking three of my favourite pairs of trainers from Dune London’s collection, I’ve worked with a key trend for the season – ditching the summer pastels and powders in favour of monochromatic colour blocking.

My advice for buying men’s trainers…

If I could give you only one piece of advice for buying trainers, it would be to keep it simple. Less is more. Go white, black or grey and buy them in leather.

Trainers should be effortless, comfortable and fashionable. Buying a pair of good quality trainers in more luxe textiles like leather will last you longer and keep your feet dry and styled to seasonal perfection.

The trainers I’m styling:

White trainers

Dune London Tricks

White trainers in colder, wetter weather may seem like a risk, but they’re not.

Although I’d always recommend treating your footwear with a protective spray, leather trainers can be worn all-year round.

Featuring a lace up fastening, chunky tonal cupsole and a round toe, these ‘tricks’ will give any outfit a sporty edge.

Once synonymous with chavs (yep, I said it), white trainers have evolved to become a style staple for men everywhere. They’re definitely worth your attention and something to invest in.

How to wear them:

Wear these white trainers with slim fit trousers or jeans. If you can bear the cold, wear with invisible socks. If not, go for a pop of colour with light pastel shades like yellow, blue or pink.

I’ve kept my full look super-simple and clean, teaming the trainers with a navy Harrington jacket from Lyle & Scott, white collarless shirt from ASOS and cropped navy chinos from ASOS.

Grey trainers

Dune London Twister

Grey trainers like these ‘Twister’ models are a great summer to autumn transition.

With a round toe, punch hole detailing, grey leather upper and contrasting white rubber soul, they’re a great staple for a weekend in the city.

How to wear them:

Much easier to wear than white, these trainers can be worn with just about anything. Grey is so versatile and sits perfectly against most colours.

Go light and bright in camel chinos for a smarter look, or go with darker denim with turn ups for something a little more casual.

I wanted to inject a bit of colour into this look and show you how far you could really push your style. Teaming with a ‘not for the faint-hearted‘ yellow Lyle & Scott raincoat, dark denim jeans and cream coloured socks, my look is functional but with a young and playful edge.

Black trainers

Dune London Techno

I think these black ‘Techno’ trainers are my favourite of the three.

In sleek black leather, the beauty of these is in their detail. Featuring a perforated tongue, stitch detail and a round toe, these shoes look far more expensive than they really are.

They’re definitely the easiest to wear of the three and great for guys of all ages.

How to wear them:

Best worn as a part of a more casual look, I’d recommend wearing with an open neck denim or check shirt, loose cut or straight jeans and a lightweight bomber jacket.

Keep colour to a minimum and let the detail of the shoes do the talking.

This is – by far – the comfiest look I’ve gone for and it’s also the most effortless. I’ve worn with a grey check shirt from ASOS, navy regular fit jeans from Lyle & Scott and light blue socks – for a look that will take you from a day in the pub to a night in a club.
